Levon Helm, longtime Woodstock NY resident and advocate for the entire Ulster County NY area, died yesterday due to complications with cancer. He was 71 years old. The famous drummer for The Band was known for his smoky southern voice, and muted, bluesy drums. Originally from Arkansas, he long ago fell in love with Woodstock NY where he lived, performed, and recorded since the mid 1970's.

He converted a large barn on his property into a recording studio and never stopped playing and recording. In 2004 he created the "Midnight Rambles" a series of live concerts, held right on his Woodstock property, which grew into a tour, albums, and eventually earned a few Grammies. He continued to play music and perform right up until the very end of his life.
