By Ulster standards, the terrain in Olive is relatively rugged and hilly, not agriculturally favorable, so you won't find the abundance of picturesque farms that give other areas in the county that charmingly bygone-era feeling. What you will find, thanks to all those peaks and valleys, is a good selection of Olive real estate offering memorable views. You'll also find that Olive homes generally have lower property taxes, courtesy of the levies paid by the reservoir.
More About the Town of Olive
Other names you will spot on the map within the Town of Olive – colorful-sounding spots like Boiceville, West Shokan, Olivebridge, and Krumville – are not downtowns at all but post office ZIP codes.
There's one name that isn't on the map, but should be: The Country Inn Restaurant in Krumville. It's an unlikely location for a friendly, unpretentious hideaway that manages to offer a staggering assortment of bottled beers – over 500 in all – while larding in sophisticated culinary rarities such as cassoulet and duck confit among reassuring staples like “meatloaf with garlic mash.” A well-kept Olive secret. Too well-kept, in my opinion.
Ashokan Reservoir
Anyone investigating property in Ulster County soon learns that “Olive” and “protected” are practically synonymous. First, the town of Olive is home to the Ashokan (rhymes with “spoken”) Reservoir – one of New York City's largest and deepest, and a place where swimming and diving, and gasoline-powered boats are forbidden, and fishing is carefully license-controlled. Second, Olive is also in the lap of the Catskill Park, a 700,000-acre oasis blending public and private lands in the manner of so many large European parks. Nearly half of that area is forest preserve, “forever wild” by law. Plus, since the enormous size of the reservoir means nearly 10 percent of Olive's acreage is fiercely protected drinking water, it all adds up to a resource-mindful, carefully preserved area unlikely to lose any of its leafiness.
Some say that living with a reservoir is like living with a mountain: It seems like you always have to go all the way around to get wherever you're going – especially since 9/11 when the so-called “spillway road” shortcut across the water was closed for security reasons.
For people who love the way of life here, that's a small price to pay. As one approving local was quoted in a recent documentary, “We'd much rather have all that water than all those neon signs that might have come with development.”
Olive, to my way of thinking, had a long history of “going green” years before we all started using the phrase.
