Woodstock NY Real Estate
Woodstock is the little town with the big reputation. Even people who have never heard of a county called Ulster know about the radically cultural little community of 7,000 or so within the county's borders.

Homes in Woodstock
Compared to some other spots in Ulster County this might seem like “the fast lane.” But life here is not so much “fast” as “full.” And you can get as close to the action as you want—a Woodstock home in or near the village—or retreat just a short distance up into an aerie high in the rolling hills and mountains, and not see another soul.
Though on average Woodstock real estate prices here are higher than in many other Ulster towns, an occasional property still comes on the market for under $200,000, with asking prices escalating rapidly from there to $1 million and up. And Woodstock property taxes are not the lowest in Ulster, either.
The types of homes in Woodstock are very much like the population itself—there's some of everything. The spectrum runs all the way from staid, old, and charming, to sleek, elegant, and aggressively 21st-Century (and a few too eclectic to characterize).
Though individualism is clearly prized here, there's a remarkable harmony among Woodstock's diversified constituencies who could easily be chafe-prone: weekend homeowners, full-time artists-in-residence, local professionals and tradespeople, weekend visitors and day-trippers who find the easy, 2 1/2 –hour Adirondack Trailways ride from midtown Manhattan a good reason to leave the car at home.
Even the architecture seems to me to celebrate diversity, with well-loved structures from every decade since the late 1800's on proud display.
History of Woodstock
This despite the fact that “Woodstock,” the legendary 1969 music festival and countercultural love-in that took the town's name and put it on the worldwide map, was actually held on a 600-acre dairy farm some 40 miles away. No matter. The little town of Woodstock was renowned as a free-spirited center for the arts long before the 60's, and that was the magnet that drew festival organizers – and the half-million ecstatic concertgoers that jammed the muddy fields that weekend – to the area in the first place. So “Woodstock” was what they called this outpouring of music, peace, and love. And it stuck.
Woodstock the town was going its own distinctive way long before the likes of the revered 1967 Scott McKenzie hippie anthem, the one that invited us all to put flowers in our hair and head for San Francisco. Settled way back in the late 1780's, Woodstock remained a sleepy little mountain town and summertime refuge for city dwellers until 1902 when the artists' colony of Byrdcliffe was founded. Intended as a sanctuary for the Arts and Crafts movement – a creative uprising against what was then scorned as the “soulless,” machine-made production of the Industrial Revolution – the colony was soon humming with artists, artisans, and musicians. Soon after, the Art Students League of New York selected Woodstock for their new summer school program. More and more creative people began seeking out Woodstock for its natural beauty and like-minded inhabitants. And to this day they keep coming.
