More ways to enjoy Ulster County fireworks

If you are traveling from out of town (or perhaps planning a holiday weekend stay-cation), guests staying at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz on the fourth of July weekend are in for a treat with special holiday weekend events including a parade, carnival and their own stellar fireworks show (These events are only for overnight guests, not open to the public, but who couldn’t use a night away anyhow?) Even if you can’t stay at the resort for all the events, the fireworks show can still be seen in various surrounding locations on either side of the mountain in New Paltz, High Falls and Accord so if you, or someone you know has a home with a view of Mohonk Tower, you’ll most likely still be able to see the show (If you’re interested in getting the exact schedule of events, guest services at Mohonk Mountain House suggests giving them a call 3-4 days prior to the holiday weekend when the schedule of events should be finalized). Similarly, Rocking Horse Ranch Resort in Highland, NY will also be holding their own Independence day weekend events, exclusively for overnight guests, including a BBQ, live entertainment and fireworks display.

Backyard BBQs with friends can also be a great way to enjoy fireworks from the privacy of your own (or your friends’ own) homes- provided they are in a prime location. Gather a group of friends and host a party, utilizing your local area’s fireworks for entertainment, or create your own. Or if there’s less than stellar views from your homebase, head to a local restaurant to enjoy dinner and a fireworks show. Kingston’s fireworks can be viewed from Keegan Ales parking lot for example, or Mariner's outdoor deck would make a perfect spot to enjoy a front row seat to the Kingston show, while enjoying some great food and drinks.

Hurricane Irene: 1 Year Later - Ulster County NY Real Estate Update

It's hard to believe that a year has passed since Hurricane Irene roared through the Hudson Valley. Now, one year after Hurricane Irene, real estate in Ulster County NY is still recovering in some areas. Controversy has swirled about certain clean-up efforts, like releasing water from the Ashokan Reservoir. But Hurricane Irene couldn't break the resilience of homeowners in Ulster County NY. If anything she brought Hudson Valley communities together as neighbor helped neighbor. 1 year later, the Hudson Valley has been enjoying a relatively decent harvest in spite of a nationwide drought. Ulster County NY farmers markets have been bustling this year, but few can forget what happened just a year ago, when the Hudson Valley experienced the worst storm in 500 years

After Hurricane Irene, major flooding in Ulster County NY proved to be the biggest challenge the area would face. Whole crops were destroyed as the local creeks, rivers, and streams crested well above their flood stages and washed away fields. Controversy soon followed, as turbid water released from the Ashokan Reservoir damaged Ulster County NY watersheds. In a rush to clean up New York City's drinking water supply (the Ashokan), dirty water known as "turbid water" was released from the reservoir into the already-overwhelmed Esopus NY Creek. Homeowners along the Esopus suffered major home damage as their wells, basements, and homes flooded from the ground up.

What a difference a year makes As always, residents of Ulster County NY have proven that they can handle anything. Despite Ulster being named one of the top 3 worst-hit counties in New York State by Governor Andrew Cuomo following Hurricane Irene, local communities banded together and rebuilt very quickly. Now in 2012, as the rest of the country is battling drought, the season has been a rather good one for local crops like sweet corn the Hudson Valley. Farmers Markets in Ulster County NY have been full of fresh, delicious produce for all to enjoy. 1 year after Hurricane Irene and Ulster County NY real estate is back, better, and more prepared than ever

Ulster County Real Estate - 5 Cool & Popular Towns for 2012 Home Buyers

Ulster County NY is an amazing place to live A very diverse selection of homes for sale in Ulster County are available depending on your tastes, lifestyle and budget. A virtual paradise for the outdoors type; mountains, rivers, forests, and creeks provide endless options for activities during any season. With New York City less than 2 hours away, we get alot of the culture, arts, and dining that naturally migrates north from the Big Apple. It's an added perk that comes with being close to the most influential (and coolest) city in the world. Of course each and every town in Ulster County is cool in its own way, but here's a quick look at what many consider to be the 5 coolest and certainly most popular towns in the area

Saugerties NY

It's official: Saugerties NY is one cool town According to Budget Travel magazine Saugerties is one of the top 10 coolest small towns in America And just recently Hudson Valley Magazine named Saugerties NY one of the Hudson Valley's Best Places to Live for 2012.We couldn't agree more Though it has that classic, small-town look and feel, Saugerties is jam-packed with great restaurants, local shops, and fun things to do You can stroll down Main Street Saugerties for a bite and some shopping, or check out one of the many fun and unique festivals like the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival. As far as homes for sale in Saugerties NY, buyers have their choice of styles and features, and it is ideal for those who like quaint but bustling villages and lovers of the water

Rosendale NY

Rosendale NY is one of Ulster County's up and coming towns and has been getting alot of attention recently through New York Times articles on Rosendale NY and elsewhere. It is home to cool and quirky festivals like the International Pickle Festival and the rockin' Rosendale Street Festival. Rosendale has a strong sense of community to match its ability to throw a party. Main Street Rosendale is full of unique restaurants and eateries to grab a bite and/or a drink with some friends. The prices of Rosendale NY homes for sale are generally mid range for Ulster County, and it is a great town for say a younger home owner who wants some nightlife either in Rosendale or nearby New Paltz NY.

Woodstock NY

Woodstock NY has a history of being a very cool place Even in the late 1800's Woodstock was a booming little town, home to tanneries and the most popular Catskill Mountain resort at the time, Woodstock's Overlook Mountain. Woodstock became legendary following the 1969 Woodstock Festival and has had a reputation for creativity and individuality ever since. These days Main Street Woodstock is bustling with shops, art galleries, and restaurants. Because of its legendary reputation, homes for sale in Woodstock NY are some of the most expensive in Ulster County. Bragging rights aside, Woodstock is full of creeks, forests and pastures; a perfect example of the natural beauty of Upstate NY.

New Paltz NY

What isn't there to do in New Paltz NY? Perhaps second only to Woodstock in popularity, New Paltz NY is a pleasant melting pot of students, locals, and New Yorkers. Each group brings their own style and energy to New Paltz but all share a love of the town. New Yorkers love it because it is less than 2 hours from NYC by either car, bus, or nearby train. Though close, it's nothing like New York, in a good way; with mountains looming in the distance and one of many local Ulster County farmers markets for groceries. Students enjoy a lively nightlife and create the demand for a variety of affordable food. Locals are keepers of the land: climbers, farmers, and lifelong residents who enjoy all of the conveniences and services that a busy town like New Paltz has. With so many groups of people wanting to live in here, New Paltz NY homes for sale fetch high prices, but it is also a great area for investment and rental properties.

Gardiner NY

Gardiner NY is stunning, rugged, and peaceful. The Shawangunk Mountain Range looms over Gardiner like a watchful giant. Being close to New Paltz NY Gardiner offers all of the conveniences of New Paltz, without as much traffic and development. Full of rolling meadows and farmland, Gardiner is forever associated with "the Gunks" the mountain range that offers world-class climbing and breathtaking views. Homes for sale in Gardiner NY tend to be on the mid to higher end of the price spectrum due to the privacy and views offered by many properties in the area. The Walkill River also runs through parts of Gardiner for fisherman and kayakers. Perfect for someone who wants to feel like they're really living in the mountains, but can still jump on the Thruway and zip down to NYC.

The Always-Cool Hudson Valley Region

These are just a handful of the cool towns here in Ulster County In fact, we here at Taft Street are already setting our sites on the next, up and coming towns So stay tuned to the best blog in Ulster County and, as always: be cool Hudson Valley

Ulster County NY Farms Need Our Support

One Ulster County town is absent from our list: Ellenville. Due to a lack of support, Ellenville NY will not be hosting its annual farmer's market. It is a sobering reminder of the struggle that local, smaller-scale farms are encountering both in NY State and across the country. When you shop at a farmer's market, you're supporting a local industry that is in jeopardy. Shopping locally whenever you can is a great way to support the community Enjoy And keep checking in with Taft Street, the most popular Ulster County blog.

Saugerties NY Real Estate - Hudson Valley's Best Place to Live 2012

Hudson Valley Magazine recently called Saugerties NY one of the Top 7 Hudson Valley Towns to Live In for 2012. We here at Taft Street Realty couldn't agree more In our opinion Saugerties NY embodies all of the great things about life here in Ulster County. It is a delightful mix of natural beauty, rich history, quirky culture, and a shared sense of local identity. Like Hudson Valley Magazine, Taft Street Realty has been keeping tabs on Saugerties' rapid growth and endless potential. We've written extensively about this cool little, 200 year old() town in posts about Main Street Saugerties NY and much more

Great Food, Awesome Activities, New Hotels, and Fun Festivals in Saugerties

As the HVMag article points out, Saugerties NY is full of fun activities and great food There seems to be an unending stream of festivals and celebrations, which always guest stars the Town of Saugerties. The world famous 2012 Saugerties Garlic Festival is a one-of-a-kind event that features all things garlic (garlic ice cream included) There is also the (arguably more pleasant-smelling) Mum Festival and the awesome annual 4th of July fireworks. Saugerties NY also is also an equestrian hotspot for the area. It is home to H.I.T.S. (Horse shows In The Sun) on the Hudson, which delights crowds with horse shows all spring and summer Winter is just as fun around Saugerties due to its close proximity to local Catskill area ski resorts. Located just off of exit 20 on the NYS Thruway, Saugerties is easy to get to from NYC, and is close to that other famous Ulster County town Woodstock NY. It is also a great departure point if you want to venture across the Hudson River into Dutchess County to visit BARD and other attractions. All of those visitors to Saugerties need to be fed and places to rest This demand has brought a great range of dining to Saugerties, from the quick and affordable cafes like Miss Lucy's Kitchen, to world famous specialty foods like Krause's Chocolate, to fanciful gourmet like the Tavern at Diamond Mills. The recently opened Diamond Mills Hotel (& Tavern) offers luxurious accommodations perched right on the falls of the Esopus Creek.

Saugerties - A Top Town to Buy Real Estate

Homes for sale in Saugerties vary greatly from the small and more modest, all the way to luxury status of $500K and up. Compared with other counties to the south and to the east, luxury homes for sale in Ulster County are plentiful and often come at a bargain. But Saugerties prides itself on being a great place for people of all lifestyles to live, and a full mix of homes for sale create a diverse housing market, with something for everyone. Here at Taft Street Realty, we know that anywhere in Ulster County is great to live, but we have to agree with Hudson Valley Magazine that Saugerties is a truly special town that really captures the Ulster County lifestyle
