About Accord, NY

Accord (pronounced ACK-ord, not a-CORD) has a population of approximately 600.  It is located along US Highway 209, in the southeast corner of New York State. It is located on the east side of the town of Rochester, in Ulster County. This is not to be confused with the city of Rochester, which is located approximately 4 hours northwest.

The hamlet is located at the confluence of Rondout and Peters Creeks, in the beautiful Rondout Valley. This area is nestled between the Catskill Mountains and Shawangunk Ridge, an extension of the Appalachian Mountains.

Closest major cities include New York City (98 miles away), Hartford CT (128 miles), and Philadelphia PA (136 miles). The closest cities to Accord are New Paltz (13 miles), Kingston (16 miles), Poughkeepsie (25 miles), and Middletown (38 miles).

Accord’s name originated when townspeople petitioned the state government against its original name of Port Jackson. Authorities could not come to an accord for a new name, so the name “Accord” was chosen.

In 2019, the hamlet was registered as the Accord Historical District by the US National Park Service. It features many sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Appledoorn Farm, Joachim Schoonmaker Farm, and Common School No. 10.

Things to See and Do in Accord

While Accord is small, it is an idyllic home base location to enjoy pastoral landscapes, farm-fresh goods, charming eateries, and outdoor activities in the area’s abundant green spaces, creeks, streams and state parks.

The area has led a resurgence in farmer’s markets, natural foods and the farm-to-table movement. There are many farms not only within the Accord area, but the Rondout Valley as well. Saunderskill Farm Market is a local favorite, offering not only local produce, but delicious baked goods, other prepared meals, and u-pick orchards. Westwind Orchard offers apple and raspberry picking and a craft cidery and restaurant featuring Italian cuisine made from both imported goods and local produce. Arrowood Farm Brewery is a sustainable, solar-powered brewpub, with resident animals providing fertilizer and consuming grain spent from the brewing process.

In addition to the agritourism sector, the Accord area also features several highly rated eateries, including the Stone House Tavern, Stonehill’s Barnyard Food Truck, and Helena’s Specialty Pierogies.

Accord offers plenty of essentials for year-round residents. There are several local grocery stores, and Main Street in Accord features a handful of shops highlighting local artisans. Students can attend local Rondout Valley High School, and Skate Time offers a retro indoor roller skating/arcade hangout.

The Rondout Valley is a gateway to a treasure trove of outdoor adventures. Minnewaska State Park Preserve features scenic overlooks of the Catskill Mountains, pristine lakes perfect for canoeing and kayaking, and trails ideal for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing and swimming.  The Catskill Mountains feature many campgrounds, resorts, and popular canoeing/kayaking and cycling locales. Shawangunk Ridge (or as insiders call them, “The Gunks”) is known for its biodiversity and scenic character, and some of the nation’s best rock climbing. The Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway is an 88-mile scenic drive through the Rondout and Walkhill Valleys.

Residents and visitors can also take advantage of more shopping conveniences and cultural amenities like movies, concerts or plays in the nearby cities of Kingston or New Paltz. Both cities are within a twenty-minute drive from Accord.
