Homes for Sale in Cragsmoor

Homes for sale in Cragsmoor make up the only recognized settlement on the miles of heavily protected spine of bedrock.  Called “one of the last great places on earth,” the 400-some inhabitants of what was originally the Cragsmoor Art Colony in the late 1800's are understandably protective of their views and their privacy. After all, there isn't much else there, and most of what is there, just over four square miles of it according to the United States Census Bureau, is now on the National Register of Historic Places as the Cragsmoor Historic District, thanks to a 1996 protective designation.

No worries about out-of-control Cragsmoor real estate development in the downtown business district: There is no downtown business district. Unless you count the post office.

Cragsmoor Homes

Rustic, older Cragsmoor homes, often modest but on generous pieces of land, are Cragsmoor's trademark, testimony to the Colony's power to draw in creative, independent, and serenity-loving settlers who valued inspiration over ostentation.

Independence is still called for here. Other than road repairs and snow plowing, municipal services are scarce. Your garbage, for example, is your responsibility. No one will come for it. And in the dead of winter, with icy winds scouring the bluffs and the roads slick, even the 15-minute drive “down the mountain” into Ellenville for milk and eggs can be an adventure.

For those who live in Cragsmoor real estate, all that can be overlooked in return for living in what can feel like the top of the world; a place where time seems to have stood still. Or at least moved very, very slowly.
