The center of Ellenville is around the intersection of Route 52 and U.S. Highway 209 (also known as Main Street). The U.S. Highway 209 runs through Ellenville, connecting with communities to the southwest and northeast throughout the Rondout Valley. Within the valley, Ellenville is also near the intersection of Sandburg Creek and Beer Kill Creek, where they join to become Rondout Creek.  

Ellenville is part of the town of Wawarsing, along with around 22 other communities, including Spring Glen, Laurenkill, Napanoch, Wawarsing hamlet, Soccanissing, and Kerhonkson. This town is located in the western portion of Ulster County.

Things to See and Do in Ellenville

While strolling through Ellenville's historical downtown watch for the immaculately restored Village Post Office and George and John R. Hunt Memorial Building (former public library). Take in an evening of live theatre, or eat at one of the charming local bistros.

As such, the town makes a great place to visit for gifts and a bite to eat, as well as a convenient location for services and supplies for those living nearby. The village is also home to a high school, medical facilities, fast food restaurants, and a nearby airfield.

The town's foothill location lends itself to an abundance of hiking trails and world class hand gliding. Visit Sam's Point Preserve with its 5,400 acres of protected rare plants and incredible views from the highest point on the Shawangunk Ridge. Kayaking enthusiasts can take their chances paddling the white water at Beer Kill River.

Overall, Ellenville is situated within an area of tremendous natural beauty, lying at the southeastern edge of the Catskill Mountains, and the western edge of the Shawangunk Ridge. Ellenville also falls within the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, a region of the country known for its beautiful forests, fall colours, atmospheric hills, and many scenic creeks and waterways. Some nearby waterways include the creeks Sandburgh, Laurenkill, Beerkill, Fantinekill, and Vernooykill.
