And since Cragsmoor residents also live in the only recognized settlement on the miles of heavily protected spine of bedrock called “one of the last great places on earth,” the 400-some inhabitants of what was originally the Cragsmoor Art Colony in the late 1800's are understandably protective of their views and their privacy. After all, there isn't much else there, and most of what is there, just over four square miles of it according to the United States Census Bureau, is now on the National Register of Historic Places as the Cragsmoor Historic District, thanks to a 1996 protective designation.

No worries about out-of-control development in the downtown business district: There is no downtown business district. Unless you count the post office.

For those with a home in Cragsmoor, all that can be overlooked in return for living in what can feel like the top of the world; a place where time seems to have stood still. Or at least moved very, very slowly.
