Centered roughly on the intersection of well-traveled Routes 209 and 44/55, Kerhonkson boasts one of those authentic, take-it-or-leave-it, sleepy “downtowns” that haven't yet been prettied up in the hope of bringing in some tourist dollars. As yet another hamlet in the Town of Rochester, Kerhonkson has its own post office and ZIP code, but for most other needs not met by Tetta's gas station and delicatessen – where you're actually very likely to find just what you were looking for – the distance to shopping and dining is a little longer than from some other Ulster locations. The sprawling Minnewaska State Park, however, is just a short ride away.
Settled by deep-rooted farming families along what would become in the early 1800s the route of the historic Delaware and Hudson Canal, Kerhonkson offers plenty of deep “pockets” of secluded privacy where a four-wheel-drive would earn its keep. Winter road crews here do a good job, but they can't be everywhere servicing the relatively sparse population of about 1,800.
