Ahoy there! When you hear the word "regatta" it may conjure up images of million dollar sail boats and funny boat shoes. The New Paltz Regatta, though certainly a regatta by definition, may not be the haughty affair you'd expect. It features wacky boats, live music, a town parade, and free ice cream! We'd prefer that to the typical Regatta any day, and the 2012 New Paltz Regatta this weekend did not disappoint! The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day as contestants braved the mighty Wallkill River on hand-made boats, colorful rafts, and even a floating house or two! Fun, homegrown events like these, that seem to pop up every weekend, are part of what make New Paltz one of our picks for the Coolest Ulster County Towns in 2012.
Regatta, Local Businesses, & Town of New Paltz Create Fun for the Whole Family
The New Paltz Regatta is a local tradition from the 1950's that was given a new breath of life in 2000, and has grown into a beloved annual community event. In 2012, the participation of local businesses and the Village & Town of New Paltz, the Regatta is now a full blown downtown extravaganza that is a great (and free!) event that the whole family can enjoy! It started with a parade through town that showcased the various boats, which concluded at the bridge over the Wallkill River in downtown New Paltz. There the crowd enjoyed live music and great food and drink provided by local businesses such as the nearby Gilded Otter Brewpub.
A Great Way to welcome Spring 2012 Here in Ulster County NY
It was a great way to welcome the good weather here in Ulster County NY. Though we wouldn't necessarily want to be in the river like the participants, the sunshine and blue skies made it feel like spring and maybe even, dare we say, summertime? So far in 2012 New Paltz homes for sale still command some of the highest prices in Ulster County. The close proximity to NYC and the Shawangunks, as well as the presence of SUNY New Paltz, all create a high demand for homes. It also creates a demand for great food, so New Paltz is full of delicious and affordable restaurants of all kinds!
